About Us
The Demosthenian Literary Society is the oldest student-run organization at the University of Georgia. Since 1803, our mission has been to cultivate a correct mode of speaking, and to qualify ourselves through practice to express our views in an effective manner.
The Demosthenian Literary Society meets every Thursday at 7:00 pm in Demosthenian Hall to practice extemporaneous debate, a type of public speaking where the speaker delivers a speech on a given topic with limited preparation. At meetings, Demosthenians propose debate topics tackling issues across policy, current events, morality, philosophy and anything else you can think of! Members and guests alike sharpen their oratory skills while in a supportive community setting that crafts strong relationships during their time at the University of Georgia.
